How are car enthusiasts bringing their passion into their workspace?

38% of remote workers say they feel disconnected from their interests and hobbies while at work, according to new workplace satisfaction survey data. But how do you balance your love of life and work when you work from home? Interests vary greatly from person to person, but for car enthusiasts working from home and thoughtful design have made it possible to merge their two passions without compromising on professionalism in their workspace.

The psychology behind passion-driven workspaces

Environmental psychology research has shown that adding personal elements to your workspace can boost your productivity and job satisfaction by up to 15 to 20 percent. But in the car world, elements are more than just a cosmetic item. They serve a very important purpose. They act as anchor points in your workflow and connect mundane tasks to emotional, and very personal, sources.

In most cases, we recommend integration by constraint. There is, however, a rather small group of drivers who we believe have long since given up on the idea of being accepted by other car enthusiasts as respectable human beings – at least when it comes to their decoration with automotive posters or the collecting of old models. In any case, there seems to be a tendency towards more refined and unobtrusive designs. Today, most drivers want to allude to the joy of driving without advertising themselves as drivers in an ostentatious way.

The desk toy is important. A decent desk toy for car enthusiasts will let your passion for cars be known without drawing attention to it. You’ll be wearing sweatpants and a mask for countless Zoom calls while working from home.

What’s more important, selectivity or enthusiasm? While having a few dragon decorations to express your love for dragons is a great way to bring in enthusiasm, having too many personal items that distract from your main work function can negatively impact your productivity and overall work environment. Items that tie your work and personal identity together are referred to as “identity comfort zones.” These are spaces where the two identities blend together smoothly, and do not come into conflict.

Practical integration strategies

Quality beats quantity. Always.

Sometimes a few decent parts can make a huge amount of difference. True car enthusiasts will appreciate how car themed mousepads are the perfect way to merge your love for cars and design with a functional item that is heavily used and provides satisfaction every time you use your computer or have a coffee.

There is no such thing as non-essential parts on a car. Everything has to be necessary, or at least have some practical or useful value. A vintage gear shift knob might look pretty on a desk, but who wants to try to handle a gear shift knob in an office? Like all car parts, this car desk accessory needs to provide real value in the workplace.

Color coordination is one of the elements that determine how products will be integrated. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, an office space should be functionally color coordinated, and all automotive products should blend into this color coordination to create a harmonious whole. Although black and gray are the most commonly used colors, black is recommended as it is the base color of the majority of products and helps to minimize visual distractions. Another way to create an integrated look is to have products match the color of other design elements. However, it is also possible to use products in a color that matches the dominant design theme of an office in order to minimize distractions.

Market trends in automotive desk accessories

According to Statista, car-themed desk accessories had a 34% sales increase from 2021 to 2023. Many people began to work from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and wanted to give their home offices a little bit of personalization.

We are at a pivotal moment in time with the potential for tremendous change and opportunity on the horizon. Looking back on the old office environment, we can see that it was a very limiting and even stern place. Employees were not always encouraged to bring their personalities to the workplace and certainly were not encouraged to bring the unique world of their imagination into their workspace. With so many of us now working from home or in a hybrid model that has no connection to the old office environment, we now have the unique opportunity to bring more of our true selves to our workspaces and to incorporate our personal passions and creative visions in meaningful ways. But how can we balance our need to honor our unique personalities and bring the fantastical worlds of our dreams to life in our workspaces while still being able to earn a living?

Balancing professionalism with passion

I think we can all agree that we have all become more aware of our workspace backgrounds when engaging in video calls. If you are a car enthusiast, here are a few things to keep in mind to balance your passion for cars with the more traditional expectations of the workplace. First, you may find yourself having to explain to others why your background may look a bit unprofessional, and second, others without an advanced understanding of modern cars may draw certain conclusions about your behavior and level of maturity based upon their perception of your background.

So I finally get to use some of my knowledge of strategic placement in the real world and it turns out that it’s good for solving most problems. I had to put a few car related things away off camera. Because as much as I love to be a fan of fan fiction, it’s hard to relate to when you are by yourself in the workshop, but a bit more appropriate when you have coworkers. I then had to put a few other things away off camera as well.

Intelligence, not elimination.

Looking ahead

I firmly believe that we have truly entered the age of hybrid workplaces where work and passion meet. We have all become accustomed to the reality of remote work and what was once a privilege has become a right.

Those who have taken time to contemplate the integration of automotive design elements into their personal lives tend to be more satisfied with the designs they produce. The boundaries between our personal hobbies and our work will continue to blur, but just as they have in the past, these boundaries will be governed by the same design considerations of context, restraint and functionality that they have always been. Rather than the boundaries expanding in the same way that they have in the past, we will be seeing a more radical widening of the scope of design and thus of possibility.

The fact that the new working hours allow for greater compatibility with the automotive passion of car drivers means that a whole number of opportunities for the integration of their motorised passion into their working and career life can be realised professionally and without any loss of efficiency. As always, it is important to work in the workplace efficiently and to meet the needs of work as well as to respect the motorised passion for the car.
